Who is the target market for 16.9% alc./vol.?

30 Jun

Last night I was at a friend’s house for dinner. She doesn’t drink red wine and had a bottle of Skulls Shiraz that someone had left there so I figured I’d give it a try. As I stuck my nose in the glass my sinuses were cleared by the flames of alcohol. I checked the label and was shocked to see 16.9%! Holy get-me-drunk Batman!!!

As the wine got poured around the table it was obvious that the guys were all digging the wine. I’m not saying these guys have bad taste but they were definitely appreciating the boldness of this wine more than the women. More and more I find my girlfriends like more delicate wines with nuanced complexity and the guys like to get bashed over the head ‘Jackass’ style. I know this is a total generalisation and most of the guys that I work with are all about finesse in their wines. They’re not your average Joe consumer though.

The label is also bold and eye-catching: it’s very ‘tattoo’ generation. http://bcliquorstores.com/product/172825#WhereToBuyIt

I’m just curious if this really is more of a ‘guy’ wine or if I’m totally off-base on that thinking. Leave a comment to let me know what you think.
